KUKA Milk Handling Robot for Refrigerated Storage
KUKA robots alleviate the stress on humans working in cold conditions by taking over repetitive tasks and maintaining consistent performance without being affected by the cold environment.
Albertsons & KUKA Team Up for Automated Cold Storage 🥛🤖
Albertsons partnered with KUKA and Integrated Packaging Machinery (IPM) to automate their dairy production line. Recognizing robots as the key solution, KUKA robots now efficiently stack milk crates in cold storage, a task previously unfeasible for humans.
Cold Storage Stacking Solution ❄️
"It's extremely cold in the fridge, and the work is very strenuous," explained Kendal Malstrom, VP of Operations at IPM. "These crates are too heavy for people to stack all day." This challenge led IPM to choose robots for automating Albertsons' dairy production line.
Robots Designed for the Food Industry 🍶
Through KUKA, IPM acquired the necessary robots and integration expertise. "KUKA is the only company with robots specifically designed for frozen palletizing, meeting Albertsons' speed requirements, with the necessary reach and payload," Malstrom noted. These robots also offer the flexibility to handle Albertsons' four different carton production lines.
Rapid Stacking in Tight Spaces 📦
"KUKA robots are designed for high-demand palletizing and depalletizing tasks requiring very short cycle times. They don't take up much space, allowing Albertsons to maintain production within their existing area," said Malstrom. IPM selected the KUKA KR QUANTEC PA Arctic robot, capable of accurate and fast palletizing at temperatures as low as -30°C without needing protective covers or mechanical heating.
Efficient Automated Cold Storage 🏭✨
The collaboration between KUKA and IPM has propelled Albertsons' dairy production line into efficient automation, overcoming the challenges of human labor in harsh cold storage environments and enhancing overall production efficiency.
